Composer's Challenge
The Composer's Belt is a challenge belt that students may work towards after they have earned their black belt. They are to compose a piece for solo recorder and write it down on staff paper using music notation. Make sure the composition has: title, composer's name, treble clef, key signature, time signature, bar lines, any necessary repeat signs or form indicators (D.C., al Fine, etc.), the correct number of beats in each measure, and a tempo marking, and dynamics. There is no maximum length, but the composition should be at least 8 measures long and show thoughtful melodic development.
Once you have composed your piece and have written in on staff paper (staff paper is in this duo tang ) turn it into Mrs. Odegard. She will edit it and make suggestions for you to think about for your final copy.
Once you have made any necessary edits and are satisfied with your final composition, give all copies and edits to Mrs. Odegard so she can input your composition into a music software. Once this is done, you will be given a final copy for your portfolio.
You will then perform your composition for the class and tell us about your process and inspiration. After this step is complete, you will have earned your Composer's Belt.
Below is a checklist to help you organize your ideas.
o Title
o Composer (your name)
o Treble Clef
o Key Signature
o Time Signature
o Form (repeats, first and second endings)
o Tempo
o Dynamics
1. Is your composition at least 8 measures long?
2. Does each measure have the correct amount of beats?
3. Did you use a variation of different rhythms and notes?
